What makes Proactive Accounting Solutions different from other accounting firms? We have a strong focus on not just lodging pieces of paper with the ATO once a year but rather working closely with you to achieve results that not only improve your operations but ultimately your life.

What are you passionate about? Making a difference in my clients’ lives, they work hard and deserve to be rewarded for their hard work both financially and personally.

Do you think it is possible to achieve work/life balance in business? I think it is definitely possible, but it does not happen without working towards it. In the case of a struggling business, it is generally necessary to improve the performance of the business first and we work closely with you to achieve this.

What do you love about living in Mackay? I was born in Mackay and so was my wife Angela – with most of our family still here it means that we have a strong connection with the town. It is a great place to bring up our three young kids with plenty to do with our close friends and family.

How long have you lived in Mackay and what do you enjoy about Mackay? Just over 20 years now. I love living in Mackay – it’s still small enough where you feel part of a friendly community and large enough for all the creature comforts like MYER.

Why did you choose bookkeeping for a career? I love numbers, I get a natural high when things ‘balance’! Most of all I enjoy helping businesses to concentrate on working in their business while I keep all their record keeping, payroll and ATO obligations up to date, The Bookkeeping Fairy Godmother that’s me!

What is your favourite part of the job? The relationships and trust formed with clients…and reconciling a tricky account.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I enjoy socialising, cooking, playing with my dog, walking at the beach and spending time with my family.

Why did you choose accounting for your career? I have always enjoyed working with numbers and I have experienced an increasing interest over the last few years in the business world. Based on my skill set, I decided that accounting would be the best career choice for a few reasons. The diversity of opportunities available within the accounting world which offer many different channels through which I can progress in a business environment was a big factor in my decision. Additionally, the flexibility accountants are often able to explore, should circumstances change significantly, convinced me that this was the career I wanted to pursue.

How do you juggle your days at work and your study time? Being a part-time student and working full-time means that time management is a massive part of my life at the moment in order to complete all that is required and expected of me satisfactorily. I have found that high commitment and motivation to my long-term goals has been vital in my progression through my degree.

Who do you admire in the business world for their achievements? I don’t actually have a particular person that I admire in the business world. However I am naturally drawn to and inspired by those who use their influence in the world to fight for the causes they believe in and to use their power to give a voice those who are under-represented.

What are your thoughts on living in Mackay? I am grateful as a young person to be living in a town such as Mackay because I believe it is a brilliant place to start out in life, where I have lots of family and support around me. Mackay offers so much room for growth due to the amount of different industries it is involved in

What is it like being part of the Proactive Accounting Solutions team? Being a small team, we all know each other very well and have a very strong family friendly atmosphere. Regardless of your position, everyone is treated equally and encouraged to challenge themselves by trying new things. This makes coming to work enjoyable as you don’t feel like you’re always doing the same thing day in, day out.

How do you help clients? The most important part of my job is helping our clients and building a good client relationship with them. Being able to deliver a rewarding outcome for our clients in a timely manner is always my priority and also what matters most for clients.

What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time? I’m from a cane farm west of Mackay, so in my spare time I love nothing more than getting out of the office and onto the land, helping on the family farm wherever possible.

What’s one of your lifestyle goals? After many years of study, I would like to reward myself with an overseas holiday. I think that it is important to take time out and travel, not only so that we can see and experience new things but also to see how others live and have a greater appreciation for what we have right here in Australia.

How long have you lived in Mackay? I have lived in the Mackay region for most of my life. At present I enjoy the conveniences of city living combined with the feeling of being in close proximity to the countryside.

What do you find rewarding about being an accountant? The most rewarding aspect of being an accountant is in solving the myriad of issues that present themselves.

Where do you see yourself at retirement age? Retirement does not really exist. One only changes what one does and enjoys with their life.

Why did you choose to be an accountant? I enjoy painting with numbers.

What has been the highlight of your accounting career to date? It’s difficult to pinpoint a single highlight. One would be finally completing my CPA, otherwise I just enjoy the feeling when you get the best outcome for a client or find a solution to a problem.

How do you help clients? As well as helping clients with their yearly and quarterly tax and accounting needs, I also help clients with their computer software needs whether it be assistance with MYOB, Reckon, Xero, Cashflow Manager or other accounting software. I also have experience on what it is like to run and own a small business as my parents owned a small business for 35 years which I learnt a lot from and use the knowledge to help clients.

Who do you admire as a leader? I believe a good leader should be able to inspire and motivate their team, be able to lead by example and most of all be able to overcome challenges when they occur. A person that I believe was a good leader was Steve Jobs.

How long have you lived in Mackay and what do you love about it? I was born in Mackay and have lived here my whole life. I love that it is a larger town but that it still has a small town feel without the hustle and bustle of a big city. I also love the fact that within an hour you can be relaxing in a tropical rainforest or having a picnic on the beach.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? I like seeing a job through to completion, from start to finish, delivering on a timely and efficient basis. Seeing clients happy because we have assisted them to reach the best possible outcome and knowing that I have been instrumental in making that happen, is a really rewarding part of my job.

What do you think clients value most about having a proactive accountant? I believe as an industry we need to do more for our clients than just a tax return and financial statements at the end of the year. Being a proactive accountant means that we work very closely with our clients to achieve their financial and personal goals, by monitoring and, to some extent, mentoring them in their everyday business life.

Why do you think that accountants get mislabelled as boring? Typically accountants are viewed as someone that sits behind a desk all day crunching numbers and not being a proactive member of the society. Being a team member of Proactive Accounting Solutions gives us the opportunity to mingle with everyday business owners, bankers and the general public.

What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time? As a mother to a small toddler, spare time is not something I have an abundance of! But definitely quality family time is high on the agenda.

How long have you been an accountant? Just over 10 years, I started as a trainee accountant back in 2004.

What area of accounting do you enjoy the most? I love meeting with new clients, working from start to finish with them; and being able to witness the client’s drive and passion for what they do, as it gives you a greater understanding of the industry they operate within.

How does it feel when you know you have achieved a great outcome for a client? It is satisfying knowing that you have helped make tasks easier for clients, whether it is providing their bankers with timely data to ensure finance is obtained or giving direction on how to better work the accounting tools they have on hand. Seeing a client achieve their financial and personal goals is very rewarding.

Where is somewhere you’d like to visit and why? My husband and I have done some previous travel, but Europe is definitely somewhere I would love to travel to. As I have an interest in ancient history, the cultural aspects of Ancient Rome and Greece hold a great deal of appeal to me!

Why did you decide to become an Accountant? I become an accountant by accident! I was accepted into Vet Science at UQ but could not relocate to complete the course so decided ‘Why not give accounting a go!’.  Over the course of the degree I discovered that I really enjoyed the accounting field and have never regretted my decision. I have since attained my Chartered Accountants certification and a post-graduate Master of Taxation.
